Modern Slavery

The use of slaves is often viewed as an obsolete practice that has been replaced with humane labour approaches. However, slavery persists today in the form of human trafficking, forced labour or bonded labour where an employer exercises powers attaching to the right of ownership, working conditions known as ‘modern slavery.’ Accountants have a role to play in designing controls and implementing accountability systems that prevent and detect human rights abuses.

Innovations in this space can be accomplished through academic-practitioner partnerships, like the study outlined below that is a partnership between researchers from York University and the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE) and experts in the field from World Vision.
